What is Functional Pathology?

The term ‘functional medicine’ is an ever-growing topic gaining more and more traction within the health sector. However, what is ‘functional medicine’, let alone ‘functional pathology’?

Functional medicine is an approach to health that focuses on the relationship between the external environment and the gastrointestinal, endocrine and immune systems in the body (Ehrlich, Callender and Gaster, 2013).

Functional pathology aims to investigate the status of these functional, biochemical, nutritional, metabolic and hormonal processes through the use of evidence-base testing. The use of functional tests are crucial in detecting potentially detrimental imbalances that may disrupt a patient’s internal equilibrium.

Functional pathology testing provides an easily accessible tool for practitioners to diagnose, treat and manage the health of their patients seeking optimal health. Our tests are designed to allow patients to collect specimens in the comfort of their own home, before returning to one of our NATA accredited laboratories for analysis.
