Patients should arrive to the COVID-19 collection centres with a completed pathology request form signed by their referring doctor (Medicare requirement), and will receive instructions on how to self-collect the sample. Please click here for additional clinical information on the COVID-19 patient self-collection procedure. If you are running Telehealth Consultations please click here to find out how we can support you with this.

Clinical Labs can receive specimens from mildly unwell patients. Acutely unwell patients should be referred to the local ED, with the recommendation to call ahead.

Criteria for Testing

The current clinical guidelines for testing in Victoria are as follows:

Fever OR chills in the absence of an alternative diagnosis that explains the clinical presentation.

Acute respiratory infection that is characterised by cough, sore throat or shortness of breath, runny nose or anosmia)

Note: In addition, testing is recommended for people with new onset of other clinical symptoms consistent with COVID-19** AND who are close contacts of a confirmed case of COVID-19; who have returned from overseas in the past 14 days; or who are healthcare or aged care workers.

*Clinical discretion applies including consideration of the potential for co-infection (e.g. concurrent infection with SARS-CoV-2 and influenza)

**headache, myalgia, stuffy nose, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea

People without symptoms should not be tested except in special circumstances such as recovered cases wishing to return to work in a healthcare facility or aged care facility or where requested by the department as part of outbreak management or enhanced surveillance.

Please refer to the latest DHHS testing criteria for up-to-date information on testing criteria.

If practitioners wish to collect, it is critical to use only one swab when testing, as there is significant pressure on supply of swabs and reagent kits for COVID-19 testing. Please provide clinical details on request slips so high-risk patients and healthcare workers can be prioritised.

The department no longer needs to be notified about any suspected cases. Only confirmed cases need to be notified to the department. This should be done as soon as practicable by calling 1300 651 160, 24 hours a day. Clinical Labs will be sending specimens to the Victorian Infectious Diseases Reference Laboratory (VIDRL) to undertake confirmatory testing for COVID-19.
