Dr Deo de Wit is a graduate of the University of Capetown in South Africa, and in 1990 completed his pathology training at Groote Schurr Hospital. In 1991 he completed an MD degree in which he developed a new PCR assay for the diagnosis of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infections. In 1991 he commenced further microbiology and infectious diseases training at the Hammersmith Hospital in London. In 1992 he completed his MRCPath and returned to Australia in 1993 to take up the position of staff specialist microbiologist on the Central Coast of NSW and continues to hold this Public Hospital appointment. Dr de Wit obtained his FRCPA in 1999 and holds a senior lecturer appointment at Newcastle University. In 2003 he joined Gribbles Pathology which later became Australian Clinical Labs (formerly Healthscope Pathology). He continues to work from Australian Clinical Labs’ Central Coast and Bella Vista laboratories while also participating in infection control at a number of Healthscope Hospitals.
