The Tissue Transglutaminase testing is used to help diagnose the presence of Coeliac Disease. Tissue transglutaminase is an IgA enzyme that fixes damage in the body. This enzyme is usually present in patients with Coeliac disease. The antibodies that attack these enzymes are called anti-tissue Transglutaminase antibodies. A blood test that indicates increased levels of these antibodies can help a practitioner to determine the presence of Coeliac Disease.
Test results may vary depending on health history, gender and age. The higher levels of Tissue Transglutaminase antibodies in your blood, the increase likelihood of a related inflammatory disorder. In younger children, tissue transglutaminase antibodies may not appear in increased levels in children with Coeliac disease. This may be due to lack of established immunity.
This test can be utilized in patients with increased risk of disease (previous diagnosis with associated disorder, family history, positive for HLA DQ2 and/or DQ8). Coeliac disease is an autoimmune disorder of the small bowel characterized by mucosal inflammation, villous atrophy and crypt hyperplasia which occurs upon exposure to dietary gluten. Gluten is a protein found in foods such as wheat, barley, rye and oats. Coeliac disease usually presents with gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea, malabsorption, or weight loss.
