Coeliac Gene Test (HLA DQ2, DQ8)

Coeliac Disease (CD) is defined as an immune-mediated systemic disorder elicited by gluten and related prolamines in genetically susceptible individuals.  The disease is characterized by the presence of a variable combination of gluten-dependent clinical manifestations, CD specific antibodies, human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-DQ2 and HLA-DQ8 haplotypes, and enteropathy.  Gluten is a protein found in foods such as wheat, barley, rye and oats.  Coeliac disease usually presents with gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea, malabsorption, or weight loss.

The European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition (ESPGHAN) has found that CD is frequently difficult to recognise.  There is a great deal of variation in presenting symptoms and many cases can actually occur without obvious symptoms manifesting.  Consequently HLA-DQ genotyping is considered the initial step in testing in patients at risk of CD.  Particularly in patients that do not have a typical symptom picture.
