About

Dr Jaco Louw completed his undergraduate studies in 2014, receiving a Bachelor’s degree in Medicine and Surgery (MBChB) from the University of the Free State, South Africa. Dr Louw spent six years as a general practitioner, mostly in emergency medicine, during which time he also completed a diploma in primary emergency care. He commenced specialisation in chemical pathology at the University of the Witwatersrand (South Africa) in 2021 and obtained both his fellowship and master’s degree in 2025. His registrar training included several years in both the Johannesburg Academic Hospital’s fully automated lab and the Development Laboratory of the University of the Witwatersrand which employs mass spectrometry and electrophoretic techniques.

He spent time as a consultant with the National Health Laboratory Service (of South Africa) in a fully automated academic laboratory. His responsibilities included clinical liaison and laboratory stewardship services to many academic departments including endocrinology, infectious diseases, pediatric subspecialities and emergency medicine.

Dr Louw joined ACL in August of 2026 where he works to help promote a lab of the future. His interests include the fundamentals of laboratory medicine such as quality assurance and laboratory stewardship as well as more advanced procedures such as dynamic function testing.
