Find out how pathology tests give you certainty

Did you know pathology is the first step in almost all patient health diagnoses?

Pathology services provide doctors with the certainty they need to make the best treatment decisions for patients.

A perfect example of this is cancer, a leading cause of death globally. Pathology plays a key role in the screening, diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of cancer. Our highly-skilled pathologists analyse cells, tissue and blood samples to identify abnormalities, and if malignant, we provide management recommendations to the referring doctor.

The same goes for heart disease, diabetes and many other health conditions. Pathology tests including cholesterol, blood glucose and many more, provide doctors with insight into your overall health, helping them guide you on lifestyle changes to help reduce your risk of experiencing a serious health event in the future, such as heart attack or stroke.

If you have been experiencing any new or concerning symptoms, for example, fatigue, loss of appetite, change to an existing mole, book an appointment to see your doctor and find your way to better health.

What if I don't have a GP?

If you don't currently have a local GP, visit healthdirect.gov.au to locate a GP near you today. You can call your old GP practice and have your medical records transferred to your new doctor's rooms.

Where can I get my pathology tests following my doctor's appointment?

Once you have seen your GP, visit your local Clinical Labs collection centre (clinicallabs.com.au/location) with any pathology request forms. We’re here to help save and improve patients’ lives.

More information about Cardiovascular Disease and the risk of Heart Attack and Stroke

Cardiovascular disease includes disorders of the heart and blood vessels. Without appropriate treatment cardiovascular disease can lead to heart attack and stroke.

There are several key risk factors for developing cardiovascular disease, these include:

  • Abnormal blood lipids
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Smoking
  • Overweight and obesity

Cardiovascular disease was the underlying cause of 25%* of all deaths in 2019!1
     *(42,300 deaths)

There were 38,600 stroke events in 2018. That’s more than 100 per day!1

How can I avoid becoming part of the above statistics?

Book a GP Health Check this week! As part of your Health Check your GP will refer you for blood tests, which include lipids.

The lipids blood test looks at the various levels of cholesterol and other fats in your blood. If you have high levels of these fats in your body, you are at a higher risk at risk of heart attack and stroke.

More information about Diabetes

Diabetes is a chronic condition where the body cannot produce enough insulin, a hormone essential for converting glucose into energy. If poorly managed, diabetes can lead to additional health complications, such as heart attack, stroke and limb amputation.1

In 2020, diabetes was ranked seventh in the leading causes of death in Australia with 5,148 deaths.2

There are 1.3 million Australians living with diabetes (5.3%). Type 2 diabetes is the most common (4.5%).3

What is the difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes?

Type 1 diabetes is a genetic condition that is often identified early in life, whereas type 2 diabetes is mainly lifestyle-related and develops over time.

How do I know if I have type 2 diabetes?

As part of your Health Check, your GP will either order an HbA1c or blood glucose test. These tests measure whether there is a high level of glucose (sugar) in your blood, this identifies whether you have diabetes.
